4 Answers to Questions About Oil Changes

No matter what you drive, you can expect to need a lube, oil, and filter change at some point. Depending on your make and model, as well as the type of oil in use, that interval will vary. All you know is that it needs to get done, but have you ever stopped to think more deeply about why? Today we take a closer look at the importance of the oil change.

What does motor oil do?

Motor oil protects the engine. Specifically, it provides lubrication for the many moving parts of the engine. Without this lubrication, friction will cause wear and damage to these parts. However, that's not the only role oil plays. Motor oil also carries contaminants to the oil filter (more on that below). This helps keep the engine clean. In addition, oil carries heat away from the engine, assisting with temperature control. Last but not least, many oil brands include additives that provide protection for your engine. For example, there are engine oils with corrosion resistance.

How does oil become dirty?

Oil collects contaminants over time. These contaminants get in through various means depending on the debris. For example, one contaminant comes from the engine and its parts. Over time, tiny bits of metal break away due to friction (even the best oil can't prevent this completely). Although the oil filter catches some metal, other bits are tiny enough to slip through the filter with the oil. Another example is by-products from fuel, such as ash residue. Because the engine isn't fully sealed off, it's even possible for dust and outdoor debris to make it into the oil.

Debris is one thing, but you're probably wondering about the color of your oil as well. It always looks dark when you change it, right? That's because oil darkens over time due to oxidation and exposure to the engine's heat. This also makes the oil less effective, so that's why it needs to be changed.

What happens if I never change my oil?

Sludge. Search images of "engine sludge" and you'll never miss an oil change again.

Over time, oil molecules break down and combine with deposits and water to create a sticky, lumpy sludge that clogs the engine. So the next time you're thinking about skipping an oil change, think again.

When do you need an oil change?

Oil change intervals vary depending on the type of engine oil you use. These intervals have also changed over time due to advancements. For example, 2,000 miles was once the average, recommended oil change interval. Eventually, that became 3,000 miles as formulas improved. Today, recommended intervals range between 3,000 to upwards of 10,000 miles depending on your vehicle, the type of oil you use, and how frequently you drive. Some manufacturers also suggest changing oil based on time, such as every 6 months or every year.
